Trims and Fastenings

Trims and finishing for my collection. I sourced sustainable trims from recycled broken and single use tents and upcycled army/military utility trims.

Primary Research

Primary images taken from ‘Air ministry by buttons’ collection of WW1 and WW2 original RAF clothing. Each piece of clothing was made with survival and functionality in mind, there is a reason for every detail. This is the way I approached my collection of contemporary survival clothing.

Collection Sustainability

The multi-patched tent offcut pieces are bagged out to create a new innovative material. I trapped black grosgrain tape into the seams and threaded it through the toggles to create functioning fastenings, which is a key detail running throughout my collection. This detail links it to the details from the tents.

Offcuts

Using my ‘tent scraps’ I created a multi-faceted patchwork textile. This utilised a combination of different tent fabric weights and textures.
